I was working that morning in the pentagon in an army staff office we had the tv on and saw coverage of the first plane hitting the tower we d been scheduled to give a Pretty Love Paris Saint-Germain logo signatures shirt briefing upstairs and down the hall from our office but opted to stay and meet where we were a stroke of luck because as it turns out the room we d been scheduled to brief in was on the side of the building where the third plane impacted when the plane hit it generated debris in our interior office but luckily that part of the building didn t collapse I went outside and as an army aviator my first thought was that a helicopter had exploded while refueling even in that immediate moment no one believed that a plane had flown into the pentagon but I soon realized it was not a helicopter explosion because the walls of the pentagon were collapsing at that point my reaction was to clear the scene and help people move away from the crash site and the fire a naval officer and I started helping people climb out of windows I especially remember a woman who had just returned from maternity leave and had brought in her baby to show colleagues that day and I saw her covered in dust I had spent nearly 20 years in the army at that point and I think the exercises and experiences you have on active duty do help prepare you for emergencies our active duty members that day were so composed and I credit that with tamping down any panic military civilians no one was screaming there was controlled egress to safety it was decided that the pentagon would be up and running the next day so we were assigned a temporary office space and got back to work I lost some good friends one my friend jerry was located in the basement of the pentagon coincidentally along with my older brother jerry was killed on impact but my brother survived and was able to move others to safety there s a range of emotions of course everyone can look back and imagine different versions of the day small decisions or events that might have unfolded differently and caused some to live or not live humansofcia.
